EUROPAN 18. Ecohabitats

The proposal is grounded in a clear idea: to build housing, one must first build the city. In contrast to the closed, hierarchical, and isolated residential model, the project envisions an adaptable and living architecture capable of embracing multiple ways of inhabiting. Homes are conceived as non-normative domestic spaces, free from rigid functions and open to diverse lifestyles, where architecture does not impose but enables.

Located in the La Verneda neighbourhood —an area marked by urban fragmentation and the disconnection between buildings, public space, and ecological systems— the project does not introduce an isolated object, but an Eco-habitat: an urban unit capable of weaving relationships. The intervention transforms a boundary into a threshold, reconnecting community, nature, and city, and turning an urban void into an active node of collective life.

The Eco-habitat is conceived as an open and evolving urban infrastructure, where housing, shared spaces, and nature form a continuous system. Productive gardens, collective areas, and communal pathways are integrated with domestic life, encouraging everyday encounters and reinforcing a sense of neighbourhood. Architecture shifts from being an isolated element to becoming a support for social and ecological relationships.

More than a building, the proposal outlines a replicable urban model in which inhabiting also means producing, sharing, and caring. The project envisions urban environments capable of generating resources, strengthening bonds between people, and rebuilding the relationship between architecture, community, and territory, opening new possibilities for a more resilient, inclusive, and life-connected city.
